Ah, a day of joy for all….
Q: I was maid of honor at my best friend’s wedding. She is of German heritage, and the great guy she married is of Mexican descent. I’m of European and Arab heritage and speak only a few words of Spanish. I brought a good friend and co-worker along as my escort. He is of Dutch heritage and is fluent in Spanish.
At the groom’s parents’ family reception, held after the regular reception, one of the groom’s cousins hit on my work friend. She asked him why — since he was fluent in Spanish — he was with me (apparently she used a very derogatory term for someone not Latino several times). My co-worker was shocked at this attitude and warned me to watch out in my interactions with my friend’s in-laws. Is this bigotry and racism something I will need to look out for in the future, or is it just this one senorita?
