Wedding Rings Sales Strong

Jewellery retailers enjoyed increased sales in May with consumers hitting the high street to spend ahead of the coming Budget announcement on June 22.

Accountancy and business advisory company BDO LLP reported that overall high street sales rose for the fourth consecutive month in May, increasing 5.4% like-for-like against the same period last year. Its High Street Sales Tracker found that fashion sales, including jewellery, had risen by 5.3% against the same period last year.

Hydrangeas Are Perfect Wedding Flower Centerpiece

Tara Guerard of Soiree frequently uses hydrangeas as centerpieces for weddings, she says. The wedding designer also has used hydrangea in wreaths, hanging flower centerpieces, flower baskets and as tiebacks for curtains.

“June is our favorite time of the year to use local hydrangeas,” Guerard says. “They have white, pink blue, lavender and purple, and longleaf, which are mainly like a green and cream. I think they go with anything from roses to Queen Anne’s lace. All on their own, they make a fabulous statement.”

When cut, hydrangeas should not be placed in direct sun and should be placed in water, the wedding planner says. How long they last after being cut depends on their age. Sometimes older ones can be a bit stronger.

Cyprus Becomes Las Vegas of Middle East For Weddings

Bilal Houri and his fiancée Rana Al Kadi left to Larnaca, Cyrpus to hold their civil marriage ceremony. The Lebanese couple of different religious backgrounds flew back to Beirut the same day, married.

“Rana and I come from different religions, but not religious people ourselves. I’m Sunni and she’s Druze,” Bilal told Gulf News. The couple didn’t want to change religions and hold a religious wedding in Lebanon, so they decided to go civil.

Despite efforts by non-governmental organisations to legalise civil marriage in Lebanon, it remains off the political agenda, and couples like Bilal and Rana are forced to travel abroad to tie the knot.

This no-choice situation has turned Cyprus into the Las Vegas of the Middle East, where couples fly to get married. It has also opened doors for travel agencies in both countries to make some cash out of religiously mixed couples and those with a double nationality.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s 50-year marriage, eons by Hollywood standards, started in Las Vegas at the El Rancho on Jan. 29, 1958.

They had met on the set of the production “Picnic,” where he made his Broadway debut at 27 and she was a 21-year-old understudy.

Their wedding came a week after Newman, then 33, divorced his first wife, Jackie Witte. Woodward, 27 at the time, was briefly engaged to writer Gore Vidal.

High Tech Rooms for Vegas Honeymoons

LAS VEGAS—MGM Mirage Inc. officials building the CityCenter complex on the Las Vegas Strip say rooms in three of its hotels will use advanced technology to let guests customize their room environment.

The company says guests staying at the $9.1 billion complex expected to open next year will be able to save settings for lights, the television, music and curtains, and have the room recognize them and adjust when the guest enters or leaves.

MGM Mirage Chief Design and Construction Officer Bobby Baldwin says the sophisticated technology will be used in the casino-hotel Aria, and non-gambling hotels Mandarin Oriental and the Harmon Hotel, Spa & Residences.

Four-year-old Grace Layman, decked out in full frilly flower girl regalia, excitedly led her smiling surprise guest to the separate kids’ party she was hosting at her dad’s wedding reception. Mickey Mouse wowed everyone — grown-ups too.

”I was teary eyed,” said the groom, Grace’s 31-year-old dad, Grant Layman. “It was fantastic.”

Layman, a Columbus businessman, said he and his wife, Jennifer, also in business, opted for a Disney destination wedding in large part because of Grace and all of their friends’ children.
